Free Solo Climbing El Capitan Yosemite National Park – Joe Rogan and Alex Honnold

The Joe Rogan Podcast begins by introducing and talking to a well-known free solo climber, Alex Honnold, who has had segments on 60 minutes, articles in Time Magazine, and National Geographic respectively. He is the only person to have free solo climbed, a method of rock climbing without ropes or harnesses, El Capitan, a nearly 3000 vertical feet rock formation located in Yosemite National Park, without ropes or harnesses. They talk about how he handles the pressure when climbing Honnold stating he maps out every move and imagines exactly how it will feel when he makes each carefully calculated move. They then talk about their diets for a brief moment, and Honnold is given some sort a dietary supplement, “F Bomb”, or Fat Bomb. The product gets some free advertising and promotion from Rogan. They then go back to talking about free solo climbing, and address the question of “can’t you just climb without harnesses and have a parachute as a safeguard?”. This is not foolproof as the wall must be more than vertical so that one doesn’t just tumble down the rock wall. They then move into discussing how mountains and rock forms difficulty are rated in the rock climbing community, the hardest grade being 15d, second hardest routes being 15c, 15b’s, and so on. They then go on to talk about how he trains, and also how Honnold had taken a bad fall from 12 feet onto a jagged boulder. They then get off track and talk about boxing and how injuries are so common in the sport. This isn’t uncommon for Rogan to relate back to boxing, mixed martial arts, or fighting. From there Honnold and Rogan begin to talk about how injuries are prevalent in sports, and how some of the more violent sports are culturally accepted such as bull riding, football, and fighting. Honnold states he isn’t a big fan of seeing people get hurt in sports as it may be a waste of human potential. It wasn’t the first time Alex Honnold had climbed El Capitan, he talks about how he and a friend climbed it in attempts to set a speed record. They set the record and in the process of climbing it with a partner, he details how his friend fell approximately 100 feet but his ropes and equipment saved him. In another more unfortunate instance, a friend of Honnolds that was climbing El Capitan had taken a fall that broke both his legs and had to be saved by the search and rescue team in Yosemite. Toward the end, Rogan asks Honnold if he plans on doing free solo climbing for the rest of his career. Alex then details how he had trained for over 20 years to be able to reach his goal of free solo climbing the El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite. He begins to talk about how he is environmentally motivated to take part in solar energy projects, that are not only good for the planet but good for the people that are recieving what they are providing. He is working to provide access to people without power, or in areas that do not have as much light or resources necessary. Honnold even predicts that in a century solar power as the primary means of energy. He talks about his motivation behind his solar project and wanting to create a better world by implementing renewable energy (solar), and preserving the natural beauty of the world. Bill Burr, a famous comedian and good friend of Rogan, has his podcast mentioned when talking to Alex Honnold about him potentially creating his own podcast so he can raise awareness about his cause and detail his experiences. Joe even states he would advertise for Honnold’s podcast if he starts one. I enjoyed the podcast as I used to rock climb when I was younger and always had respect for people that could scale such huge rock formations. It is a true test of mental will and strength, and Alex Honnold did an excellent job in the interview. A good potential advertiser in the podcast may have been The North Face, as it is right up there ally and they would get good exposre for their brand if they marketed on that specific podcast.Half_Dome_from_Glacier_Point,_Yosemite_NP_-_Diliff

I was surprised that the social network snapchat did not have nearly as many users as Instagram, as I see both being used what I thought was equally as frequently between students my age. However the data accounts for total users, and not a specific age group. I also expected twitter to have more than 500 million users, when in fact it only was stated there were less than 400 million, with a total of 336 million.Screen Shot 2018-10-02 at 7.25.30 PM.png

Social Media + You

Whether it is a form of news, entertainment, or a way to communicate with friends and family, social networks can be a tool that can improve the quality of one’s life. Social media has had a large impact on society and is widely used because it allows users to easily connect with friends, family, or even people they may not have met in real life. Social media plays a role in many people’s lives each day due to the vast amounts of data that can be viewed with a simple tap of the finger, or mouse click. Today, over 1 billion people are active on Instagram, while Facebook leads with over 2.1 billion active users as of July 2018 (Statista, 2018). Ease of accessibility paired with the fact that users can find what they desire in a short period of time, are two reasons that it may be possible to become addicted to, or dependent on social networks. As these networks are more closely intertwined in our lives each day, it can become a much higher priority to use the networks one may get so accompanied to using on a regular basis. Utility everyone receives from engaging on social networks is different from person to person, however the main reasons are to raise visibility on things deemed interesting, to gather useful information, or to release emotional stress. Those who tend to spend all day on sites such as Twitter for example, usually are quick to give rational excuses for their lack of self-control. If habitual usage persists without restraint, and is acted on continuously without regard to stopping, behavioral or social problems may develop. Users addicted to social media may feel anxious, depressed, or a feeling of isolation. Despite the negative traits that come with social media overuse and addiction, the urge to log back in and refresh their pages can seem irresistible to those suffering from the very problem, in hopes of a new follower, new content, or an influx of “likes” on one’s latest post leading to the desired feeling of satisfaction or pleasure. All in all, it is ultimately left up to the user to determine how frequently they use social networks, and so the power is left to the individual to take into consideration their usage habits, their value of their time, and the utility they get from using these networks. Social media is not only re-shaping the way we communicate, it is also given us a new way for individuals to connect, in ways not possible before. For example, I had two good friends in high school, twins, whom both moved abroad to Sweden before we graduated. Using social media, the three of us can both message each other directly, or as a group, and communicate with one another without being charged a premium by our phone networks via the Instagram platform. As noted earlier, we can also share things we deem interesting with one another and continue to keep our friendship alive in a way not possible before social networks. If one practices self-control, and is self-aware of their social media practices, they should aim for virtue, not vice, in terms of excess or defect when using networks in an effort to use social media in a healthy manner.
